Veterans Green Jobs mission is to provide military veterans in Colorado with meaningful employment opportunities in residential energy efficiency sectors that serve our communities and environment. We believe that veterans are well suited towards these careers, which allow our nation to be more energy secure and independent, and provide for environmental stewardship of our communities and public lands. Veterans have a strong desire to continue to serve after their military service and they bring considerable technical and personal skills from their military service to the workforce. However, they need mentorship, career counseling, on-the-job experience and networking to find these jobs at a time when the unemployment rate for returning post-9/11 veterans exceeds 10%. Help us make a difference in the lives of these returning veterans and their families !

Testimonials

We can't do these things ourselves anymore." - Lois

Lois hopes her bills will be lower due to recent weatherization services.

When two volunteers from Veterans Green Jobs came knocking on Lois and Ernie's door to share information about energy efficiency services, Lois and Ernie gladly accepted the offer to have a free home energy audit. They qualified for the services based on their income.

"We're striving for lower energy bills," says Lois, who has lived in the home with her husband for 50 years.

A few years ago, they installed new doors and windows to keep the cold air out of their home. They also insulated their attic. "But we found out we needed 10 more inches of insulation to keep us warm."

In addition to the need for better insulation, Veterans Green Jobs determined Lois and Ernie's 1956 home needed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The couple was also eligible to receive a new energy-efficient refrigerator and an updated furnace. The existing furnace didn't meet code.

Lois understands the benefits these enhancements will offer her household, which also includes her daughter and grand-daughter. "I'm hoping the new refrigerator will lower the bills," she says.

Ernie is a veteran of the U.S. Army. While not a person of many words, Ernie appreciates the work Veterans Green Jobs does to put veterans to work. "It's a great program," he says with a smile.

Lois has a newspaper in front of her. She points to it. "I understand veterans have a hard time getting jobs when they get home. They left perfectly good jobs and it's terrible to come back when they don't have good paying work."

For Lois and Ernie, ages 82 and 84, Veterans Green Jobs provides much needed services. They both see a clear benefit to local communities.

Lois sums it up: "We can't do these things ourselves anymore. It's a great service Veterans Green Jobs is offering."
