Mission

The Listen Foundation provides for and assists children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families, with access to a proven speech, language, and listening therapy method to help them achieve a life of independence. This includes providing support programs for families and professionals that are involved in helping these children achieve their goal of learning to listen and talk.

Background Statement

"Hearing" is the most effective modality for the teaching of spoken language (speech), reading, and cognitive skills. With today's hearing aid technology, cochlear implants, early identification and intervention, auditory brain access and development are available to babies with even the most profound deafness (Robertson 2000).

The child who is deaf and does not have the ability to communicate with everyone in their world, faces a life of feeling isolated and dependent, and will struggle in school and the workplace because speech and hearing demands are so high. For over 45 years the Listen Foundation, an award winning non-profit, has advocated the auditory-verbal therapy method which teaches these children spoken language through listening, so they can attend regular schools with age appropriate speech, language and reading skills. It is Listen's mission that all children with hearing loss have the opportunity to become listening, talking participants of mainstream society.

Auditory-verbal therapy in combination with hearing aids or cochlear implants teaches children with hearing loss how to hear and comprehend the spoken word. The children learn how to use their hearing and speaking potential to use spoken language rather than sign language. It is unique in that the therapy is individualized and the parents attend every session so that they become the primary facilitator of their child's speech and language development. As a result, these children can function in a hearing world and have the skills necessary to attend and thrive in the regular classroom setting. The Listen Foundation is the only program in Colorado dedicated to this approach. This foundation not only provides financial support to families, but offers a parent education series and a community outreach program for all families with children who have a hearing loss.
