The organization is a true resource for the pet community - including low-cost spaying and neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, dog licensing and community room rental. Founded in 1976, the public/private partnership provides animal control services to municipalities within Jefferson County. The open-admissions facility (that never turns any animal away) cares for nearly 8,000 animals annually and is one of the largest animal shelters in the metro Denver area.

Background Statement

Our old facility, Table Mountain Animal Center, was built in 1976 as a combined effort of Jefferson County, and the cities of Lakewood, Arvada and Wheat Ridge. The Center was built to function solely as a dog pound, with the purpose of temporarily housing lost dogs, and removing dangerous and potentially dangerous animals from neighborhoods and city streets. In 1994 the organization became Table Mountain Animal Center and a publicprivate partnership was formed with the creation of the 501(c)3 Table Mountain Animal Center Foundation.

In August of 2010, Table Mountain Animal Center moved to a brand new facility and changed its name to Foothills Animal Shelter. Foothills Animal Shelter continues to serve the greater metro area, and is still a partner with Jefferson County and cities and municipalities within the County.

The Board of Directors for the Shelter is a governance operations board comprised of an appointed representative from each of the governmental entities partnered with Foothills Animal Shelter. The Board of Directors for the Foothills Animal Foundation is comprised of up to 17 volunteer community members dedicated to the growth and success of Foothills.
