Mission

STARFISH ONE BY ONE empowers and educates young women in Guatemala to be leaders in their communities.

What's New

In 2010 Starfish One by One expanded its mentorship-scholarship program to a total of 10 groups in Guatemala. The program is busy systematizing the methodology of its critical mentorship component to ensure that each young woman in the program is equipped with the critical information she needs to overcome academic, social and economic obstacles to become an empowered woman capable of promoting change in her family and community. Starfish One by One now serves 150 students.

Most recently, Starfish One by One has collaborating other reputable NGOs such as Save the Children and WINGS to ensure high quality material and methodology in the areas of personal finance and reproductive health, respectively.

Impact Statement

Young women hold the key to a more just and equitable world. Working with young, Mayan women in Guatemala, Starfish One by One unlocks their unique talents and skills through personalized mentorship and education.

STARFISH ONE BY ONE created a pilot project in 2007 with one group of 15 girls, one mentor and one site. This unique program paired academic scholarships with long-term mentorship from a community role model. The results were overwhelmingly positive.

Starfish has since had measured growth to ensure continual attention to quality. In 2010, 8 groups of 15 young women are receiving scholarships and mentorship from a community role model. In addition to academic reinforcement, each young woman receives powerful information on subject such as:
*Personal Finance
*Reproductive Educatin
*IT
*Environmental Stewardship
*Social Responsibility
*Accessing community resources
*Self Esteem and Leadership

Four more groups will be added in 2011.

Needs Statement

We are searching for leaders and community organizations within the Mayan community to help us in the creation of our projects. We are working in a collaborative manner to create alliances with other NGOs to share the goals of community leadership development. Our organization will grow with the energy of volunteers and funders who share our vision.

Background Statement

The founding board members of STARFISH ONE BY ONE, Ted and Connie Ning and Mimi Schlulmberger, have collectively over sixty years experience in international development working in both Vietnam and Guatemala. Ted and Connie were the Founders of THE FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE in 1988. With the evolution of THE FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE into a rural women's microcredit project with over 16,000 clients and a $3.4 million dollar loan portfolio, they learned of the many difficulties faced daily by poor rural Mayan families. Pilot projects were created in children's education and much was learned of problems of school success. STARFISH ONE BY ONE continues their experience of walking with the poor in creating educational and leadership opportunities for adolescent girls as future leaders of their communities. The Nings created a very strong US community organization with over 20 supporting chapters throughout the US, Iceland, and Japan with over 1700 individual donors, and many American visiting groups to Guatemala.

Board Chair/President Statement

STARFISH ONE BY ONE is on a rapid ascent. We have learned much about the role of the volunteer in making a difference. This organization is a distillation of many lessons learned. By focusing to the education of young girls in rural Guatemala, we can make a big difference
In January 2010, Travis Ning became Executive Director. Travis, who has had 10 years of international experience including the Peace Corps, working with many different NGOs, and a Master's Degree in International Program Administration, will continue to develop our mission of serving the poor.
