Background Statement

Alternatives To Family Violence, Inc. founded in 1978, by citizens in Adams County, Colorado to address the epidemic of domestic violence impacting the community is 32 years old. After initially housing victims in their homes, a residence was purchased and opened in 1980 as an emergency safe shelter. In order to meet the needs of people who did not require emergency safe shelter, but who were subjected to domestic violence, a Community Outreach and Support program was started for women and children in 1982. Acknowledging the strong connections between community outreach and the willingness of women to access services, the outreach program evolved into the Community Outreach and Support Program. Today, Alternatives provides the best trained, educated and largest emergency Safehouse for women and their children located in the 17th Judicial District, which includes Adams and Broomfield Counties.
