The NITA Foundation

A nonprofit organization

Effective, efficient, ethical trials: if all lawyers in the nation fully developed the advocacy skills we teach, NITA's vision would have become reality.

Testimonials

Donations to the NITA Foundation support not only the attorneys who receive scholarship assistance but also all of the clients they serve. Now, we can advocate effectively and confidently for everybody who comes through our doors.
- Santa Barbara County Legal Aid Foundation

After returning from the NITA training, I was immediately confronted with my first jury trial. Thanks to my training, I was able to marshal the facts, organize and effectively use my exhibits, motions, objections and more. Thanks to the confidence I gained at NITA, the jury returned a favorable verdict for my client in under a half an hour. I can't thank you all enough.

Because many of us are not independently wealthy, the NITA Foundation enables us to do together what most of us could not do individually: underwrite millions of dollars in scholarships for worthy recipients. Being a part of that is very satisfying.

We cannot allow the best and the brightest advocates with a commitment to public service to become disheartened due to inability to afford professional skills training. We need to provide more in the way of support.
- Clinical Professor of Law

For me, it's not about the CLE credits, it's about getting better, being the best I can be for my clients, and, hopefully, one day be qualified to teach others eager to learn.

Mission

The NITA Foundation is the fundraising arm of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. NITA, the Institute, is the originator and the gold-standard of intense multi-day courtroom skills programs for practicing lawyers. NITA provides programs across the country, knowing this: Better Skills, Better Lawyering, brings Better Justice.

43 years ago the mission and the method was developed to provide original, disciplined advocacy training courses for the advancement of effective, efficient and ethical lawyer skills. NITA's mission is to:

• To develop, train, and mentor lawyers in trial advocacy skills to advance effective, efficient, and ethical lawyer skills and thus support and promote the effective and fair administration of justice.

We, the Foundation, extend NITA's impact deeply to reach ordinary people who are under-represented. We do this by helping public service lawyers learn their NITA skills, such as through scholarships and dedicated training.

Background Statement

NITA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 1971. It is a dedicated team of professors, judges and practicing lawyers who believe that skilled and ethical advocacy is a critical component of legal professionalism in all systems of dispute resolution that seek justice. NITA's programs are highly distinct in their learn-by-doing teaching methods. With an average student/faculty ratio of 4:1, NITA programs guarantee quality guidance, instruction, and individualized critique.

Founded in 2003, the NITA Foundation has awarded more than $2.9 million in funds for scholarships and support for NITA public service programs. It is important to remember that one hundred percent of all gifts donated to the NITA Foundation directly support our program services - either our scholarship program or public service programs - without any deduction for administrative or fundraising expenses.

The NITA Foundation provides public service scholarships for those who represent the underserved, as well as funding for public service programs in the areas of child advocacy, domestic violence, criminal law, death penalty defense, legal services matters, tribal justice, promoting rule of law programs in developing nations and other areas of criminal law.
