We rely on private donations to run our mostly cage-free rescue shelter. Since our inception, we have provided over 11,000 animals with care, rehabilitation, and security until safe and lasting homes are found. We are a compassionate shelter doing life-saving work with minimal resources. We always are in need of donations, volunteers, and fosters to continue the work we do saving lives and finding homes for cats.
In 2023 we moved from our rental building on Youngfield to a larger building the shelter purchased on Kipling in Lakewood. Between the renovations we needed to do to prepare the space for cats and the mortgage payment, we are stretched thin on funds. Additionally, this year has seen several FIP cases which are very costly to treat as well as other high-expense life-saving treatments. Every dollar you can donate makes a difference for the staff and the cats!

Mission
We are a 501 c3 Non-profit, Charity Organization, operating a Limited Intake, mostly Cage-free Rescue & Shelter. Our primary focus is on rescuing and finding safe and lasting homes for homeless, abandoned, unwanted and at risk cats and kittens through the shelter. We have also rescued many dogs through our foster system. Many of our rescues are ill, injured, older, shy, and have other healthy and behavioral issues due to abandonment, neglect, abuse and worse. For many Angels with Paws was their last hope.
We provide compassionate care including Veterinary care (off-site - we have no on-site Veterinarian), medications, rehabilitation, food, shelter, other basic needs and a place to live until the animal is adopted. Our commitment to our animals extends beyond adoption as want to stay informed on how our animals are doing after adoption and our Adoption Agreement requires that if the Adopter can no longer care for the animal, it must be returned to Angels with Paws.
Through our staff, volunteers, fosters and working with other rescues, we are part of a network of caring people that reaches far and wide. We work with local organizations in the metro Denver area and beyond to save lives, reduce pet overpopulation, promote responsible pet ownership, the need to spay and neuter and educate people on the cruelty of declawing. We educate pet owners on responsible ownership and ways to help keep their animals when possible. We believe in saving lives and finding safe & lasting homes. We hope for the day when no animals will be put down in shelters due to lack of space. We believe that all animals have the right to life.
Background Statement
Jean Ausenbaugh was volunteering and fostering for a local animal shelter for many years when she and a few other caring individuals recognized the need for a Limited Intake Rescue and Adoption Center. They began Angels with Paws late in the Summer of 2003 as a foster based rescue.
In September of 2003, Jean purchased a small fast food restaurant building in Lakewood, Colorado and renovations to convert it into our existing shelter were completed on February 7, 2004. Since then, Angels with Paws has rescued and found homes for over 11,000 animals, mostly cats and kittens, but also many dogs through our foster system.
Sadly Jean passed away in 2020, but the shelter continues her work to honor her legacy.
We continue to work toward the goal of saving lives one life at a time and finding safe and lasting homes for each one. Someday, we hope to build a sanctuary including a veterinary clinic where we can increase our capacity to help.
